Not only is the clutch and clutch components essential to the safety of your driving – if they start to fail, not only can they impair the car’s performance but they may lead to you failing your MOT Test.

When should I replace my clutch?
Common symptoms are:
• Whistling noise when shifting gears
• Stays idle when you put it in gear, and the car doesn’t move
• When forced into any gear without the clutch, the car does not shut off
• Transmission slipping while driving
• Gearbox sticks and is hard to turn when not in motion
• Groans when you try to turn it
• Vehicle not shifting into higher gears
• Judder and severe low frequency vibrations
• Slipping and accelerating out of usual sync
• Burning smell
• Vehicle moves when pedal is fully depressed
• A sudden move off of the vehicle despite gradual release of accelerator

A manual vehicle transmission uses the clutch to connect the engine and transmission together each time you push down on the clutch to move from idle position or change gears. Each time you change gears and let out on the clutch pedal, your clutch disc, pressure plate, flywheel and release bearing get a little bit of wear. Your clutch and its companion components are designed to last above 60,000 miles of normal driving and clutch use.

The clutch may last a lot longer or a lot less than 60,000 miles. It depends on a lot of different conditions – like whether the vehicle is used as a tow vehicle all the time or if the transmission is used to downshift a lot to slow down.
